HYPNOTHERAPIST CODE OF ETHICS With hypnotherapy being such a popular solution for people around the country, choosing the best professional to work with can be challenging. Just as with medical doctors, not all are the same, some good, and some not so good. Since a hypnotherapist delves into the subconscious, you want to work with someone who is licensed but who also takes this as a serious form of help. Therefore, any hypnotherapist you are considering should live by a strict code of ethics.
How can you tell if a hypnotherapist follows a code of ethics? You will need to ask questions and never be afraid to ask for credentials. Now, a code of ethics could also vary since different people live by different ethics but overall, you should work with a hypnotherapist who promotes credibility and the acceptance/belief of hypnotherapy. This individual should be involved in educating the public about the benefits of hypnosis through education media such as books, newsletters, articles, video and audio, seminars, and interviews.
Other things that should be covered in a hypnotherapist's code of ethics are maintaining a high standard of knowledge, communication, and skill as they connect to clinical applications. A professional hypnotherapist should also encourage and support the well-being of his or her patients, along with spiritual growth. By training people about the art of hypnosis, as well as ways of using self-hypnosis, you benefit.
The code of ethics that you should look for in a hypnotherapist includes upholding the highest level of integrity, regardless of the phase of the practice. In addition, the hypnotherapist should present all information and claims to you about hypnosis accurately, never leave you with unresolved goals and issues, to always, present you with the truth even if controversial, and to "practice what he or she preaches", meaning to live the ethics, not just speak them.
The bottom line is that for hypnosis to be successful, you and your hypnotherapist must believe in it. Therefore, you want to work with someone that will maintain your information in the strictest of confidence. Obviously, many people turn to a hypnotherapist to uncover secrets or to learn how to stop a destructive behavior. The last thing you want is to work with someone that shares your story with the next client or anyone for that matter. Of all codes of ethic, confidentiality is by far the most important. During your hypnosis session, you will be talking about and sharing things important to you so they should stay something between you and the hypnotherapist and no one else.
While hypnotherapists who have trained 200 hours or more to become certified are probably good and dedicated the hypnosis, we recommend you consider working with someone who also has a degree in counseling. This coupled with the study of hypnosis gives you the best of both worlds. In addition to working with someone who understands the principles, techniques, and applications of hypnosis, you get the benefit of having the guidance of a professional counselor.
The exciting thing about choosing hypnosis to overcome your fears or challenges is that this form of treatment is finally getting the recognition deserved. Today, hypnosis has gone through many changes and with financial support, tremendous research has been performed making this an exceptional tool. In fact, you will now find major hospitals such as UCLA and Cedar Sinai adopting hypnosis as regular practice.
The word, "Hypnosis" no longer conjures up negative or questionable thoughts. Instead, because professionals are living up to a strict code of ethics, hypnosis is being accepted around the world as a powerful and effective way to improve and enhance life. Therefore, when you get ready to make change and begin your search for a good hypnotherapist, remember the code of ethics and all it stands for.
