HYPNOSIS 101 Almost everyone has heard of hypnosis. The problem is that some of the information floating around is not only inaccurate but also untrue. Because hypnosis is a viable tool for improving and enhancing life, we wanted to provide a basic outline of hypnosis, what it is, the way it works, and why more and more people are turning to it for help. Like most people, you probably have some areas of your life that you would like to change. Perhaps you have a bad habit of biting your nails, you might struggle with a lack of self-confidence, or you might be desperately trying to lose weight. Hypnosis is an excellent tool that can help in each of these areas and more.
If you are ready to make positive changes in your life to achieve wellness, then we are confident this article will answer any questions you might have about hypnosis and its benefits. First, hypnosis has been used in practice for centuries in one form or another. As an example, early Romans and Egyptians used sleeping chambers to help a person reach a deep state of relaxation whereas shamans involved with tribal medicine would incorporate repetitive action such as singing, chanting, and dancing to change a person's state of consciousness.
Today, people are hypnotized in everyday life without even knowing it. Stop for a second and think about how many times you were in a meeting at work or taking a test in class when suddenly, your mind began to wander, taking you to another place. Although you were daydreaming about the plans you had for the upcoming weekend or the home project you needed to be working on, you were still very much aware that you were in a meeting or taking a test. Hypnosis is much the same - the mind is some place else yet aware of current surroundings.
Although many people will think of hypnosis as receiving suggestions from a hypnotist or hypnotherapist, or using tapes to perform self-hypnosis, which are in fact a part of hypnosis, there is actually much more involved. For example, hypnosis works with brain waves, which consists of beta or your waking state, alpha, which is your focused concentration, theta or deep meditation, and then delta, the dream state. When our brain waves vibrate at the alpha or theta levels, hypnosis will be effective.
During the delta or theta state, the mind is influenced. In this case, voice can be a powerful tool, which is where the hypnotist or hypnotherapist comes into play. To give you an example, if you have ever been driving down the road, singing away to a favorite song but missed a turn, what happened is that the brain wave was in the alpha mode, meaning the subconscious mind was driving the car but the conscious mind was singing.
In other words, the body's connection between the nervous system and the conscious mind is the subconscious mind. When a person experiences some type of block in memory, hypnosis can be extremely beneficial by allowing and helping the mind get through to the subconscious mind's huge database of information, which is the alpha and theta state.
The interesting thing about the subconscious mind is that it is powerful. Any experience or piece of information is locked into the subconscious so it remembers everything. On the other hand, the conscious mind often becomes trapped in the moment, which is influenced by the memory of the subconscious. Unfortunately, the conscious mind often chooses behaviors and patterns that create unhealthy consequences. The result is that the subconscious mind then repeats the behavior or pattern but at the conscious level. Hypnosis reaches to the subconscious mind to change those learned behaviors and patterns so the actions carried out by the conscious mind are different and positive.
The way hypnosis works is that the professional hypnotist or hypnotherapist will offer suggestions to the subconscious mind, which are then accepted. Once the suggestions have been received, the conscious mind begins to make different choices. As an example, in trying to lose weight, the professional would work with the subconscious in suggesting food is not that interesting or tasty. As this type of positive suggestion is accepted, the next time you get ready to eat something bad, your subconscious mind is now telling you that the food is uninteresting and not tasty.
It may sound complicated but in truth, hypnosis is actually quite simple. However, because there are definite principles and disciplines that must be followed concerning suggestions for hypnosis to work, it should be taken seriously. Therefore, you need to work with someone who is skilled and licensed so you get the benefit of the hypnosis. Remember, if the wrong types of suggestions are given to the subconscious mind, the results could be less than favorable.
